전통부터 현대까지 아우르는 국립무용단과 김종덕 예술감독의 신작 

오는 4월 25일부터 27일까지 국립극장 해오름극장에서는 국립무용단의 〈사자의 서〉가 진행된다. 국립무용단의 〈사자의 서〉는 국립무용단 김종덕 예술감독이 부임 후 처음 선보이는 작품으로 티베트의 파드마삼바바가 남긴 불교 경전 『티베트 사자의 서(Tibetan book of the Dead)』에서 영감을 받은 작품이다. 이 경전은 인간이 죽은 뒤 사후세계에서 헤매지 않고 좋은 길로 갈 수 있게 이끌어 주는 지침서다. 삶과 죽음에 대한 깨달음을 주는 대표적인 불교 경전으로 손꼽힌다.

망자의 시선으로 의식과 상념을 건너 고요의 바다에 이르는 여정을 춤으로 빚어내는 〈사자의 서〉는 망자의 시선으로 삶과 죽음, 인간 존재에 대해 철학적인 질문을 던진다.

망자가 겪는 49일의 여정을 단계적으로 구성

총 3장으로 구성된 국립무용단의 〈사자의 서〉는 죽음 후 망자가 겪는 49일의 여정을 단계적으로 보여준다. 1장 ‘의식의 바다’는 죽음을 애도하는 제사로 시작하여 저승사자가 등장해 망자를 사후세계로 인도한다. 이때 죽음의 강을 건너며 춤추는 망자의 독무와, 죽음을 애도하며 살아있는 자들이 만드는 웅장한 소리를 통해 죽음과 삶의 대비를 그릴 예정이다. 2장 ‘상념의 바다’에서는 망자의 지난 삶이 파노라마처럼 펼쳐진다. 이때 지난 삶을 마주하며 겪는 다양한 감정들을 묘사하며 허상에 사로잡혀 지난 삶을 놓지 못하여 겪는 망자의 감정 굴곡을 정교하게 표현한다. 3장 ‘고요의 바다’에서는 시작과 끝을 알 수 없는 춤을 통해 삶과 죽음, 그리고 사후세계가 연결된다는 철학을 담았다. 삶에 대한 집착과 욕망을 내려놓은 망자의 절제된 표정과 과장되지 않은 움직임으로 깨달음의 진리를 표현하고 이승에 남은 살아있는 자들이 49재를 지내며 막을 내린다. 국립무용단 51명 단원 전원이 출연하는 〈사자의 서〉는 강렬한 에너지를 담아 춤사위에 쏟아낼 예정이다.

김종덕 예술감독은 “미래에 대한 불안과 팍팍한 현실 속에서 살고 있는 현대인들이 삶을 돌아보고 앞으로 가야 할 길을 생각해 보는 시간이 되기를 바란다”라며 “작품을 통해 자신의 지난 삶을 되돌아보고 삶의 원동력을 찾는 계기가 되길 바란다”고 밝혔다.

The National Dance Company of Korea’s 〈Book of the Dead〉 will be performed at the National Theater’s Haeoreum Theater from April 25th to 27th. The National Dance Company of Korea’s 〈Book of the Dead〉 is the first work presented by Kim Jong-deok, artistic director of the National Dance Company of Korea, since his appointment. It is a work inspired by the Buddhist scripture Tibetan Book of the Dead left behind by Padmasambhava of Tibet. This scripture is a guidebook that guides humans to follow a good path after death without getting lost in the afterlife. It is considered a representative Buddhist scripture that provides enlightenment about life and death.

〈Book of the Dead〉 which dances the journey across consciousness and thoughts to the sea of silence through the eyes of the dead, asks philosophical questions about life, death, and human existence through the eyes of the dead.

The National Dance Company’s 〈Book of the Dead〉 which consists of a total of three chapters, shows step by step the 49-day journey that the dead undergo after death. Chapter 1, ‘Sea of Consciousness’, begins with a memorial service to mourn death, and then the Grim Reaper appears and guides the dead to the afterlife.
