PD수첩 보도에 따르면 브니엘예고의 전 한국무용과 교사이자 (교감을 거쳐) 현재 교장인 현 모 씨는 특정 무용학원 원장들과 긴밀한 관계를 맺고 있었고, 학생이 지정해 준 학원을 떠나거나 바꾸는 것을 금지했다. 그 사실을 몰랐던 학생이 학원을 옮기면 해당 학생에게 언어폭력을 행사하고, 특정 남자 강사와 성적으로 문제를 일으킨 것처럼 사실무근의 소문을 유포하거나 묵인했다. 그 소문은 해당 지역의 학원과 학교에 일파만파로 퍼져 결국 좁은 무용계에서의 활동을 사실상 봉쇄했다는 증언도 나온다. 이는 교육자가 아닌 ‘입시 브로커’에 가까운 권한 행사를 보여준다.

이런 문제가 특정 학교 한 곳에만 발생했겠는가? 예술 중고 및 대학 입시 전반에 걸쳐 비공식적 라인, 학원-교사 간 유착, 추천서 장사, 실기 평가 불투명성 등으로 이루어진 ‘입시 카르텔’이 존재한다는 의혹은 오래되었다. 봉건적 도제 교육이 남아 있는 예술계에서는 이 같은 카르텔이 학생의 진학과 미래를 결정짓는 절대 권력으로 작동하고 있다.

이러한 폐쇄적 구조는 예술고교에만 국한되지 않는다. 무용계에서는 대학교수들이 퇴임한 후 입시와 연계된 사설 기관을 운영하며, 대학 입시에 암묵적으로 영향력을 행사한다는 의혹도 제기된다. 이들은 현직 교수들과의 친분, 후배나 제자들과의 인맥 등을 활용해 사실상 ‘입시 컨설팅 시장’을 좌우한다. 학부모들은 입시에 유리한 조건이라면 맹목적으로 따르기를 강요받고, 학생들은 실력보다 ‘라인’을 따라야만 꿈에 다가갈 수 있는 현실에 놓인다. 이는 교육의 기회균등을 무너뜨리는 불공정이자, 입시를 둘러싼 또 다른 형태의 카르텔이 된다.

Let's save children from the dangerous cartels and secret collusion of adults!

On July 22, 2025, MBC PD Note reported on the tragic incident at Busan's Peniel Arts High School and the circumstances behind it. The investigation into the suicides of three students in June brought to light a similar incident four years earlier, in which another student also took his own life. The fact that similar incidents occurred in 2025, following 2021, makes it difficult to dismiss this as mere coincidence. What's shocking is the suspicion of collusion between academies, teachers, and even the principal surrounding the college entrance exams behind these tragedies.

According to a PD Note report, Mr. Hyun, a former Korean dance teacher at Peniel Arts High School and now the principal (after serving as vice principal), had close relationships with directors of certain dance academies and prohibited students from leaving or changing their assigned academies. Unaware of this, if a student changed academies, he would verbally abuse the student and spread or condone unfounded rumors about a sexual relationship with a male instructor. There are also testimonies that these rumors spread like wildfire among academies and schools in the area, effectively blocking the student from participating in the narrow dance community. This demonstrates an exercise of power more akin to that of an "admissions broker" than an educator.

In the arts world, where a feudalistic apprenticeship system persists, this cartel wields absolute power, dictating students' advancement and futures.

This closed structure isn't limited to arts high schools. In the dance world, allegations have been raised that retired university professors operate private institutions linked to admissions, exerting tacit influence over university admissions. These individuals effectively control the "admissions consulting market" by leveraging their connections with current professors and their connections with juniors and students. Parents are forced to blindly follow any favorable admissions strategy, and students are forced to prioritize "lines" over merit to achieve their dreams. This is an injustice that undermines equal educational opportunity and becomes yet another form of cartel surrounding college entrance exams.

What is truly heartbreaking is the fear and suffering students endured in the shadow of this power. Schools, supposedly safe and enjoyable spaces, have become suffocating spaces that can easily lead to social death sentences. The testimonies of children who were so fearful they could barely breathe, and the voices of children who were excluded from the academy and society due to malicious rumors, leaving them with nowhere to go, cannot be dismissed as mere personal misfortune. This constitutes structural abuse.

Collusion between academies and schools must be investigated as criminals, and those responsible for driving students to their deaths must be severely punished. In particular, the structure in which certain teachers or academies monopolize career paths is not simply a matter of influence; it is a dangerous power that can lead to a violation of the right to education and the right to life. The government and education authorities should actively address this issue and devise reforms to the college entrance exam system to dismantle this absurd cartel.

The death of one child is a tragedy. If four children are sacrificed within the same confines, it is no longer a tragedy; it is a crime against the system. Education is not a market where children's lives are at stake for the distribution of power. We can no longer afford to leave children in the dangerous hands of adults. Now is the time for thorough investigations, punishments, and institutional reform to root out the college entrance exam cartel. Silence and complicity are tantamount to complicity. Let's save our precious children through college entrance exam reform.
