망하거나 죽지 않고 살 수 있겠니. 이지민 작가의 2000년 문학동네 신인작가상 수상작 제목이다. 1930년대 일제강점기 경성을 배경으로 로맨스와 독립운동이라는, 그다지 어울리지 않아 보이는 두 가지 주제를 솜씨 좋게 이어 붙인 소설은 신인상에 걸맞은 패기만만한 작품이라는 평을 받으며 2008년 〈모던보이〉라는 영화로 만들어졌다. 그리고 내용과 관계없이 한 번 들으면 잊기 어려운 독특한 제목은 사회 문제를 다룬 오피니언이나 칼럼 등에서 자주 회자되며 한 시대를 풍미했다.

최근 사회면을 장식하고 있는 무용계 사건 사고를 접하며 필자 또한 오래전에 읽은 책의 제목을 새삼스럽게 떠올렸다. 안전불감증이 지배하는 무대와 도덕불감증이 지배하는 학교, 무용계의 순환구조를 이루는 두 세계가 서로 경쟁이라도 하듯 사건과 사고를 주고받는 동안 누적된 실망은 갈 곳을 잃은 지 오래다. 이제 사회면에 실리는 그 어떤 사건 사고 소식도 놀랍거나 충격적이지 않으며, 냉소로 무뎌져 딱딱해진 마음에는 더 이상 실망감조차 깃들지 않는다.

지난 8월 23일, 밀양아리랑아트센터에서 국립무용단이 〈사자의 서〉 공연을 앞두고 이재화 조안무가 오케스트라 피트 아래로 추락하는 사고가 일어났다. 사고 당시 오케스트라 피트가 하강 중이었고 이 조안무는 무대에서 객석으로 이동하던 중 발이 피트 쪽으로 빠지면서 추락해 안와 골절과 팔꿈치 골절의 부상을 입었다.

김종덕 국립무용단장은 공연 시작 전 무대 시설을 점검하던 중 사고가 발생했다고 상황을 전했고, 박인건 국립극장장 역시 리허설 전 조명 확인을 위해 무대에 올라갔다가 사고를 당했으나 다행히 경상에 그쳤고, 극장마다 안전요원이 배치돼 있으나 무대까지 상주하는 것은 아니며 무대 위는 무대감독이 통솔하고 단장이 공연 전반을 관리한다고 시스템을 설명했다.

그러나 이들의 설명과 달리 이 조안무는 무대 시설 점검이 아니라 당일 공연 전반을 진두지휘하던 중 사고를 당했고, 부상의 정도 또한 경상이 아니라 중상이었으며, 서울이 아니라 일산 소재 병원에서 치료받고 있는 것으로 전해졌다. 극장이나 단체 측에서 이 조안무와 긴밀한 커뮤니케이션을 하고 있는지 우려가 드는 대목이다.

이보다 하루 앞선 22일에는 세종예술의전당에서 공연 리허설을 하던 20대 남녀 무용수 2명이 역시 오케스트라 피트 아래로 추락해 부상을 당했다는 소식이 전해졌다. 갈비뼈 등에 금이 가는 정도의 경상에 그친 남성 무용수와 달리 장기 일부가 손상되어 긴급히 절제 수술에 들어간 여성 무용수는 근육 파열과 장기 손상 등의 정도가 심각해 회복이 불가능할 수도 있다는 진단이 내려졌다.

부상을 당한 무용수들은 창무국제공연예술제 기획공연 참여자들로 알려졌다. 사고 후 극장 측에서는 무대 양쪽에 위험을 알리는 안전요원이 있었고 형광 물질과 형광 테이프로 경계를 표시하는 등 안전 조치가 있었다고 해명했지만 무용수들은 피트의 정확한 하강 시점을 안내받지도 안전 교육을 받지도 못했다고 사고 전 상황을 설명하고 있다. 더욱이 공연을 기획한 창무국제공연예술제 측은 아직까지 공식적인 입장을 내놓지 않고 있다.

그런가 하면 국립전통예술고등학교는 입시 비리와 교사 채용 비리 의혹으로 경찰의 수사를 받고 있다는 사실이 알려졌다. 비리 의혹을 받고 있는 건은 지난 2023년 치러진 입학시험으로, 실기 전형 직전 합격자와 불합격자의 번호가 적힌 포스트잇이 심사위원들 사이에서 공유되며 실기 전형과 상관없이 합격자와 불합격자가 가려졌다는 의혹이다.

JTBC 보도에 따르면 당시 실기 전형에 참여한 심사위원은 총 5명으로, 이 가운데 4명이 포스트잇 쪽지를 공유했다. 취재진이 입수한 입시 실기 채점표를 분석해보면 불합격 대상으로 지목된 학생의 경우 200점 만점의 전공 실기에서 포스트잇을 공유한 4인의 심사위원은 최하점에 가까운 140점대를, 포스트잇을 공유하지 않은 심사위원 1인은 198점을 주었다. 포스트잇을 공유하지 않았던 심사위원은 당시 유일한 외부 심사위원이었다.

100점 만점인 부전공 평가도 결과는 비슷했다. 3명의 심사위원이 70점대를, 외부 심사위원은 96점을 주어 이 학생은 결국 불합격했다. 하지만 불합격 학생은 실기 전형이 끝나고 나흘 뒤에 열린 전국대회에서 1위를 차지하며 실력을 증명했다.

해당 입시 비리 사건에 대해 예술계 관계자들은 학교 교사와 개인 레슨으로 얽힌 뿌리 깊은 입시 관행이 이런 의혹을 만들어낸다고 증언하고 있다. 입시 비리와 별도로 수사가 진행 중인 채용 비리는 이를 증명하는 중요한 퍼즐 조각이다. 경찰 조사에 따르면 학교의 전 동문회장이 교사 채용 실기시험에 심사위원으로 참석해 다른 심사위원들에게 졸업생인 특정 지원자의 점수를 높게 주도록 종용했으며, 이는 교장의 묵인하에 진행되었다. 서울경찰청 광역수사단 반부패수사대는 최근 금천경찰서로부터 사건을 넘겨받아 이 같은 의혹을 조사하고 있다.

또한 지난 6월 부산 브니엘예술고등학교에서 일어난 재학생 사망 사건은 무용계 입시 카르텔이 어떻게 학생들의 숨통을 조이는 올가미로 작동하는지 보여주는 단면이다. 브니엘예고에서는 지난 2021년에도 한 한국무용 전공 학생이 극단적 선택으로 목숨을 잃는 사건이 일어났고, 이는 지난 7월 MBC ‘PD수첩’을 통해 재조명되었다.

부산교육청은 특별감사에서 학교와 외부 무용학원 간의 카르텔이 의심되는 정황이 드러났다고 밝히며 학교장 현 모 씨를 학교와 사교육 학원 간 입시 카르텔의 주역으로 지목했다. 학교장이 학원장들과 결탁해 학생들의 학원 이동을 제한하고 특정 학원의 이권에 개입했다는 것이다. 학교장이 학원을 옮긴 학생들을 향해 폭언과 괴롭힘을 행사했다는 교사의 진술도 확보됐다. 학교장 현 씨는 2021년 사건의 배후로도 지목되고 있다.

학교장의 주도로 특정 학원 강사들이 매년 반복 채용됐으며, 일부는 학생들을 상대로 불법 개인 레슨을 진행한 사실도 확인됐다. 이 과정에서 문제를 제기한 교사는 직무와 수업에서 배제되는 등 도리어 불이익을 당한 것으로 조사됐다. 무용과 학부모들은 개인 레슨 금지 조치에 앞장선 교사들을 대상으로 민원을 제기하기도 했다.

부산교육청은 교장과 행정실장 등에 대한 중징계를 학교법인에 요구하는 한편 학교장과 행정실장을 포함한 26명에 대해 신분상 처분을 내리고 8건의 행정상 조치와 함께 8000여만 원 규모의 환수·환불 조치를 내렸다고 밝혔다. 그러나 일각에서는 이번 사례가 지난 3-4년간 누적돼 온 사안임을 들어 부산교육청의 직무유기를 지적하고 있다.

이후 하인리히는 이 법칙을 산업재해 예방 이론에 적용시켜 사고 모델을 ‘도미노 이론’으로 정리하였다. 그는 사고가 일어나고 발전하게 되는 과정을 ‘사회적 환경 → 노동자의 실수 → 위험한 행동 및 기계적 위험 → 사고 → 재해’의 5단계로 설명하며, 이 가운데 ‘위험한 행동 및 기계적 위험’을 제거하면 사고의 연쇄를 막을 수 있다고 주장했다.

이 글에서 열거한 국립무용단 지방 공연 사고에서부터 한양대 무용과 교수의 학생 인권 침해 사태에 이르기까지, 사건의 양상과 사고의 내막은 모두 다르지만 공통점이 한 가지 있다면 책임져야 할 위치에 있는 이들 가운데 자신의 책임을 통감하며 이후 재발 방지를 약속하는 사람이 아무도 없다는 것이다.

단언컨대 이렇듯 책임을 느끼지 못하고 책임질 줄 모르는 자가 책임자 자리에 앉아 있는 이상 같은 사건은 계속 반복될 것이며, 같은 사고는 재해로 몸피를 한껏 키워 돌아올 것이다. 이 거대한 재해의 연쇄 앞에 가장 시급한 것은 얼어붙어 마비된 감각을 깨워 부끄러움을 느끼는 일이다. 부끄러워할 줄 알아야 위험의 심각성을 인식하고 책임의 무게도 느낄 수 있을 것이다. 망하거나 죽지 않고 계속 살아가며 이 세계를 유지하기 위해서는 이 불감증부터 치료해야 한다.

그동안 우리는 소를 잃은 뒤에도 소 잃은 한탄을 하느라 외양간 고칠 줄은 모른 채 방치하다 외양간마저 잃어버리는 어리석음을 반복해 왔다. 앞에서는 우리 모두의 잘못이라며 비장하게 일갈하며 뒤에서는 ‘우리 모두’라는 익명성 안에 부끄러움도, 위험도, 책임도 모르는 자들을 감춰주며 너그럽게 품어 왔다. 이 부끄러움의 감각을 회복하지 않는다면 세계의 회복은 요원하다. 부끄러워할 줄 모르는 자들이, 위험을 감지하지 못하는 자들이, 책임의 무게를 느끼지 못하는 자들이 지금 이 시간에도 이 세계의 미래를 빠르게 지워가고 있다.

Can we survive in this world of insensitivity without perishing or dying?

Can we survive without perishing or dying? This is the title of Lee Ji-min's 2000 Munhakdongne New Writer's Award-winning novel. Set in Gyeongseong during the Japanese colonial period in the 1930s, the novel skillfully weaves together two seemingly incongruous themes: romance and the independence movement. This novel received rave reviews, worthy of the award, and was adapted into the 2008 film Modern Boy. Regardless of the content, the unique title, once heard, is hard to forget, and has become a frequent topic of discussion in opinion pieces and columns on social issues, creating a buzz for a time.

Recently, as I have encountered the scandals and incidents in the dance world dotting the social pages, I too have been reminded of the title of a book I read long ago. The disappointment accumulated over the years, as if the two worlds of the dance world were competing with each other—the stage dominated by safety insensitivity and the school dominated by moral insensitivity—has long since lost its way. No news of incidents or accidents in the social pages is now surprising or shocking, and hearts hardened by cynicism no longer harbor even a sense of disappointment.

On August 23rd, before the National Dance Company of Korea performed "Book of the Dead" at the Miryang Arirang Arts Center, choreographer Lee Jae-hwa fell into the orchestra pit. The orchestra pit was lowering at the time, and while moving from the stage to the audience, his foot slipped into the pit, causing him to fall, suffering a fractured orbital bone and elbow.

Kim Jong-deok, director of the National Dance Company of Korea, explained that the accident occurred while inspecting stage facilities before the performance. Park In-geon, director of the National Theater of Korea, also experienced an accident while on stage to check the lighting before a rehearsal, but fortunately suffered only minor injuries. He explained that while safety personnel are stationed in each theater, they are not permanently stationed on stage. A day earlier, on the 22nd, news broke that two dancers in their 20s, a man and a woman, also fell into the orchestra pit during a rehearsal at the Sejong Arts Center and sustained injuries. Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the National High School of Traditional Arts is under police investigation for allegations of college entrance exam and teacher recruitment corruption. The minor skills test, which is out of 100 points, yielded similar results. Three judges gave the student a score in the 70s, while the external judge gave the student a score of 96, ultimately disqualifying him. However, the student who failed the practical skills test proved his talent by winning first place in a national competition held four days after the practical skills test.

Regarding the admissions scandal, art community insiders testify that the deep-rooted practice of collaborating with school teachers and private tutors fueled these suspicions. The ongoing investigation into the hiring scandal, separate from the college admissions scandal, is a crucial piece of the puzzle. According to a police investigation, the school's former alumni association president sat on the teacher recruitment exam as a judge and encouraged other judges to give higher scores to a specific alumnus, a candidate who was also a graduate, with the principal's tacit approval. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Metropolitan Investigation Division's Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit recently received the case from Geumcheon Police Station and is currently investigating these allegations.

Furthermore, the death of a student at Busan's Buniel Arts High School last June illustrates how the dance admissions cartel operates as a strangling noose for students. In 2021, a student majoring in Korean traditional dance at Buniel Arts High School took his own life, a situation that was brought to light again on MBC's "PD Notebook" in July.

The Busan Office of Education announced that a special audit revealed evidence of a suspected cartel between the school and an external dance academy, naming the school principal, Mr. Hyun, as a key figure in the college entrance exam cartel. A teacher's testimony also revealed that the principal verbally abused and harassed students who transferred academies. Mr. Hyun is also being accused of being behind the 2021 incident.

Under the principal's leadership, instructors from specific academies were repeatedly hired year after year, and some were found to have illegally provided private lessons to students. The investigation revealed that teachers who raised concerns suffered disadvantages, including being excluded from their jobs and classes. Parents of dance students have also filed complaints against the teachers who spearheaded the ban on private lessons.

The Busan Office of Education announced that it has requested the school corporation to impose severe disciplinary action against the principal and administrative director, while also imposing disciplinary action against 26 individuals, including the principal and administrative director. It has also imposed administrative measures on eight cases and ordered the recovery and refund of approximately 80 million won. Meanwhile, in April, news broke of Professor Park's alleged alcohol service and bullying of students at Hanyang University's ERICA Campus Dance Arts Department. An incident that occurred in 2022 was belatedly revealed. Professor Park introduced Chung Mong-seok, chairman of Hyundai Heavy Industries, as a "scholar" and forced students to dance and sing. Chairman Chung responded by pulling out envelopes of money, claiming he would award the students. Chairman Chung is the second son of Chung Soon-young, honorary chairman of Sungwoo Group and younger brother of Chung Ju-yung, honorary chairman of Hyundai Group. There's something called "Heinrich's Law." In 1931, Herbert William Heinrich, an American insurance company employee, meticulously analyzed 75,000 accidents and discovered a statistical law: before one serious fatal accident, 29 people suffer minor injuries, and 300 people almost certainly suffer non-injuries from the same cause. To put it more simply, for every person who slips and falls on a frozen winter's ice and suffers a serious injury, 29 others have previously suffered minor injuries from similar slips and falls. Heinrich later applied this law to industrial accident prevention theory, formalizing the accident model as the "domino theory."
