공연비평

고블린 파티의 저력을 다시 한번 확인하다: 〈SALE〉

 

도깨비들이 벌이는 흥겨운 한판, 그들의 모임이 그려내는 신체의 그림은 어떤 것일까? 비상한 재주로 사람을 홀리기도 하고 심술궂은 행동과 시선으로 놀래기도 하는 한국 도깨비들이 모인 정당, 고블린 파티의 신작 〈SALE〉이 3월 29-30일 대학로예술극장 소극장에서 있었다. 고블린 파티의 임진호, 지경민, 이경구가 오랜만에 힘을 합쳐 세 사람만의 무대를 만든 만큼 그 정체성과 저력, 위트가 명확하게 돋보인 공연이었다. 공연 〈SALE〉은 이 세 사람이 2016년 초연한 〈옛날 옛적에〉 이후 8년 만에 원년멤버가 모였기에 더욱 뜻 깊었다. 고블린 파티가 최근까지 전통적인 것, 한국적인 것, 장르 간 경계 허물기 등 스펙트럼을 넓히며 개성과 탐구라는 수식어가 함께 했다면 이번에도 역시나 컨템포러리 댄스로서의 명성을 이어갔다. 

 


독특함, 파격, 풍자, 해학은 고블린 파티의 특성이다. 그렇다면 이번 공연 〈SALE〉이라는 제목에서 풍기는 의문. 그들이 SALE을 해서 파는 것은 무엇일까? 물론 그들이 파는 것은 춤임에 틀림없다. 그럼에도 그들의 말대로 춤과 웃음, 신기한 오브제와 소리 같은 공간 속 모든 것을 팔고 있었다. “팝니다. 팝니다. 춤을 팝니다. 저희가 마음에 드시나요? 그럼 저희도 팝니다.”, “아이고, 한 푼에 웃음을 팔고 두 푼에 눈물을 사니, 여기 장사치가 따로 없네. 저 쓸모없어 보이는 잡것들을 이리저리 붙였다 떼다 하니 그새 신기한 물건이 뚝딱하고 만들어지는데. 도저히 사지 않고는 버틸 수가 없네 그려. 여보게들, 여기 세일 중이니 구경하고 가시게나.” 이 글에는 이들의 의도가 너무도 선명하게 담겨있었다. 




공연이 시작되면 지경민의 꺾기가 도드라진 솔로가 잠시 보이고 곧 임진호와 지경민은 붉은 색의 고무파이프를 들고 나와 악기처럼 윙윙 소리를 내며 휘두르기도 하고 분리했다 합체했다 하면서 다양한 이미지를 만들어냈다. 마치 중국무술이나 애니메이션 장면 같기도 했고 코끼리에 대한 설명을 하면서 코끼리 코로 사용하는 등 관객들의 웃음을 끌어냈다. 이후 이경구는 장난감 칼을 들고 나와 위트 있게 사용했고 임진호는 엿가위를 치며 솔로를 펼치기도 했다. 트리오는 주로 칼싸움 형태로 이뤄졌고, 춤도 춤이지만 무대에서 음악, 연주 및 작곡의 김현빈, 김민정의 역할은 매우 컸다. 흔히 볼 수 없었던 독특한 타악기 연주를 통해 시선을 집중시킨 김현빈과 소리, 연기까지 병행하며 열연을 펼친 김민정은 전체 구성에서 움직임과 유기적으로 어우러져 밀도를 높였다. 


맏형인 임진호는 묵직하게 중심을 잡아주었고, 지경민은 특유의 유연하고 해체된 움직임으로 시선을 끌었다. 그럼에도 가장 눈에 들어오는 인물은 이경구였다. 가녀린 외형을 지닌 그녀는 파워풀했고 자신만의 아우라를 발휘하며 임진호와 지경민, 연주가들과 브릿지 역할을 하며 작품을 풍성하게 만들었다. 공통적으로 그들의 춤은 의식의 흐름을 따르거나 일관된 형식을 지니지 않고 자유롭게 이어졌다. 그리고 전체 구성이 느슨해질 만 할 때쯤 활력을 주는 포인트를 알고 현명하게 대처했다. 후반부에는 상자 안에 담긴 노란 병아리 인형을 팔았는데 어린 관객들에게 인기 폭발이었고, 사지 못한 꼬마들은 눈물을 보이기도 했다. 무엇을 팔 것인가에 대한 고민이 곳곳에 엿보였고 자신들의 색깔을 유지하면서도 대중성을 가미했다. 


이들의 반짝이는 아이디어는 로비에서도 발견할 수 있었다. 공연에 사용되었던 여러 오브제들을 탁자 위에 전시해놓고 가상의 가격(꽤나 높은 가격)을 붙여놓은 것이다. 오브제를 자세히 볼 수 없었던 사람들은 가까이서 이것들을 이리저리 살펴보며 그 용도와 춤에 쓰임을 다시금 되새겨보았다.




〈SALE〉은 제목 속에 내포된 자조 섞인 주제가 이들의 시끌벅적한 공간의 연출을 통해 잘 직조된 하나의 완성품으로 구현되었다. 스토리라인을 강조하지 않고 역동성, 실험성, 대중성이 더해지며 고블린 파티가 보여준 다채로운 장면구성과 웃음의 포인트를 잘 캐치해 이끌어내는 재능이 소극장 무대에서 오붓하게 즐기기에 적절했다. 공동안무로 다시금 뭉친 임진호, 지경민, 이경구는 자신들의 신체를 통해 온갖 장난을 치기도 하고 실험하기도 하면서 개념에 침잠된채 움직임을 저버린 안무가들과는 달리 너무도 진실 되게 몸으로 관객들과 대화하고 있었다. 이들이 묵묵히 흘린 땀과 노력이 아름다운 이유는 그 때문이다.

Confirming the power of the Goblin Party once again: 〈SALE〉



What kind of picture of the body is drawn by the goblins' exciting bout of fun and their gatherings? The new work 〈SALE〉 by Goblin Party, a political party made up of Korean goblins who can charm people with their extraordinary talents and surprise them with their spiteful actions and gaze, was held at the small theater of Daehakro Arts Theater on March 29-30. It was a performance that clearly stood out for its identity, power, and wit, as Goblin Party's Jin-ho Lim, Kyung-min Ji, and Kyung-gu Lee joined forces for the first time in a long time to create a stage just for the three of them. The performance 〈SALE〉 was even more meaningful because the three original members gathered together 8 years after 〈Once Upon a Time〉, which premiered in 2016. Until recently, Goblin Party had expanded its spectrum, including traditional, Korean, and breaking down boundaries between genres, and was accompanied by modifiers of individuality and exploration, but this time, it also maintained its reputation as a contemporary dance.


Uniqueness, unconventionality, satire, and humor are the characteristics of a goblin party. Then, the question that arises from the title of this performance, 〈SALE〉. What are they selling on SALE? Of course, what they sell must be dancing. Nevertheless, just as they said, they were selling everything in the space, including dance, laughter, amazing objects, and sounds. "sell. sell. I sell dance. Do you like us? Then we sell it too.”, “Oh my, selling laughter for a penny and buying tears for two pennies, there is no business here. By attaching and detaching seemingly useless things here and there, strange things are quickly created. I just can't bear it without buying it. “Hey guys, there’s a sale here, so come check it out.” This article contained their intentions very clearly.


When the performance started, Ji Kyung-min's solo with prominent bending was briefly seen, and soon Jin-ho Lim and Kyung-min Ji came out with red rubber pipes and made a buzzing sound like musical instruments, swinging them, separating them, and combining them to create various images. It was like a scene from Chinese martial arts or animation, and the use of an elephant's trunk while explaining the elephant drew laughter from the audience. Afterwards, Lee Gyeong-gu brought out a toy sword and used it wittily, and Lim Jin-ho performed a solo while playing taffy scissors. The trio mainly took the form of sword fighting, and although the dance was also a dance, Kim Hyun-bin and Kim Min-jung had a very big role in music, performance, and composition on stage. Kim Hyun-bin, who drew attention by playing a unique percussion instrument that was rarely seen, and Kim Min-jung, who gave a passionate performance by combining sound and acting, organically blended with movement throughout the entire composition to increase density.


The eldest, Lim Jin-ho, held the center of gravity with a heavy weight, while Ji Gyeong-min attracted attention with his unique flexible and disorganized movements. Nevertheless, the person who caught the eye the most was Lee Gyeong-gu. With her delicate appearance, she was powerful, and she displayed her own aura, acting as a bridge with Lim Jin-ho, Ji Kyung-min, and her musicians, enriching her work. In common, their dances continued freely without following a stream of consciousness or having a consistent form. And when the overall composition needed to be relaxed, we knew the points that would revitalize it and responded wisely. In the second half of the show, a yellow chick doll in a box was sold, which was very popular with young audiences, and some who couldn't buy one even cried. Concerns about what to sell were evident everywhere, and they added popularity while maintaining their own colors.


Their sparkling ideas could be found in the lobby as well. Various objects used in the performance were displayed on a table and an imaginary price (a fairly high price) was attached. People who could not see the objects in detail looked at them up close and reflected on their purpose and use in dance.


In 〈SALE〉, the self-deprecating theme implied in the title was realized as a well-woven finished product through their production of a noisy space. Without emphasizing the storyline, dynamism, experimentation, and popularity were added, and Goblin Party's colorful scene composition and talent for capturing and bringing out the points of laughter were suitable for intimate enjoyment on the stage of a small theater. Jin-ho Lim, Kyeong-min Ji, and Kyeong-gu Lee, who came together again through joint choreography, played all kinds of fun and experimented with their bodies, and unlike choreographers who abandoned movement while being immersed in concepts, they were communicating with the audience with their bodies in a very sincere way. That is why the sweat and effort they put in silently is beautiful.
