내년 2026년 10월 1일, 나운규 감독 영화 〈아리랑〉 개봉 100년을 맞는다. 이를 기념하는 조직 구성과 기념행사를 준비하자는 논의가 시작되었다. 24일 오후 인사동 태화기독교회관 회의실에 15명의 문화계 인사들이 모여 토론을 벌였다.

영화 분야에서는 원로 영화평론가 김종원, 영화연구소장 한상언, 영화배우 이영은, 국악 분야에서는 (사)아리랑연합회 이사장 김연갑, 국립민속국악원장 김중현, 이라랑연구가 기미양, 문화기획 분야에서는 음반제작자 이무성 화백, ICT전문 한성대교수 전완식, 연출가(변사) 장광팔, 방송작가 김경순, 세계아리랑로드추진단 후원회장 이창구, 남북교류 분야에서는 서울아리랑보존회장 유명옥 이사장과 국악진흥연구소장 박상진 전 동국대 교수가 참여했다.

좌장을 맡은 김종원 선생은 모두 발언에서 개봉 백년을 기념하는 토론회는 시의적절하다고 하며 조직위원회의 주체에 대해 밝혔다.

“영화 〈아리랑〉은 ‘민족영화’, 그 주제가는 ‘겨레의 노래’가 되었습니다. 그러나 영화 〈아리랑〉은 필름없는 역사 속의 전설로 남았을 뿐이나, 주제가는 모든 아리랑의 대표 ‘본조아리랑’으로 남북은 물론, 세계인이 부르는 노래가 되었다. 나아가 2012년 유네스코 인류문화유산 ‘한국의 서정민요 아리랑’ 등재 현장에서 불러져서 인류의 노래가 되었다. 이런 상황이 이번 백년 기념사업의 주체는 영화계보다는 국악계가 이끌고 가야 한다고 생각한다.”

이어 1990년 남북단일팀 결성 논의 시기에 통일부에서 근무했던 김경웅과 민간 남북교류 실무경험이 많은 이창구의 교류 가능성에 대한 진단이 있었다. 그러나 둘 다 비관적이었다. “교류 차원의 1차 목표인 상호 교차 방문 행사 개최는 현실적으로 불가능하다. 그러므로 제3국에서 북한을 참여시키는 방식과 각기 달리 개최하고 그 결과물을 주고받는 방법 밖에 없다.”라고 결론을 내렸다.

이와 관련하여 김연갑 이사장은 6월 중에 중국 교민 단체와 이 문제를 협의할 예정이라며, “영화 〈아리랑〉과 나운규에 대한 재평가 주제의 학술회의, 관련 문헌 전시회, 남북 리메이크 〈아리랑〉 작품 교환 상영, 탄생지 회령과 개봉관 단성사에 기적비(記蹟碑) 건립, 그리고 2012년과 2014년에 각기 다르게 등재한 유네스코 인류무형유산 〈아리랑〉을 공동으로 재등재하는 문제를 실현하기 위해 중요 사안이 되어야 한다.”라고 밝혔다.

지난해부터 이 모임의 준비 멤버인 국립민속국악원 김중현 원장과 전완식 한성대 교수는 매우 현실적인 발언을 하였다. 요약하면 기념사업이 일회성으로 끝나면 안 된다며, 지속 가능한 전망을 담은 ‘세계아리랑로드’로 확대, 발전시켜 법인화하는 동력을 이번 기념사업에서 확보해야 한다고 주장했다.

이를 받은 김연갑 이사장은 “그렇긴 해도 영화계에는 한국영상자료원과 영화진흥공사와 춘사국제영화제위원회 같은 기관이 있으니 공조를 기대한다.”라고 하였다. 그래서 제2차 토론회 때 이들 기관 실무자를 초청해야 한다고 덧붙였다.

이번 토론회에서 기대를 모았던 분야는 남북교류 분야였다. 먼저 한상언 소장이 북한은 “1949년 〈영화써클원들의 교양서〉라는 세포교육 문건에서 나운규와 영화 〈아리랑〉을 높이 평가하였다.”며 회령 출신에 친일 협의가 없다는 점에서 앞서서 평가를 받은 것이 아닌가 한다고 밝혔다.

이어 기미양 선생은 “북한은 2000년 초 〈아리랑축전〉 첫 장면에서 ‘아리랑민족’이란 구호를 썼다. 이 시기에 나온 자료들에서 아리랑은 모두 영화 〈아리랑〉에서 출발한 것이라고 밝혔다. 이런 점에서 북한은 이번 100년 기념행사를 어떤 형태에서든 반드시 할 것으로 예상한다,”라고 주장했다.

그리고 남북교류 분야에서 남북단일팀 합의 과정 시기에 국토통일원(현 통일부)에 근무하며 남북 문화교류에 깊은 관심이 있는 김경웅 소장은 전화 통화에서 “정치적 혼란상에서도 100년 기념은 이 시대를 사는 이들에게는 행운이기도 하다. 북한도 이를 그냥 넘기지 않을 것이니, 이번 개봉 백년 기념이 교류의 계기가 되길 바란다.”라고 했다.

한편 이 토론회의 주축인 김종원 선생과 김연갑 이사장은 30여 년 전에 유현목 감독과 함께 영화아리랑연구회의 부회장과 간사를 맡았던 이 분야 전문가이다. 김종원 선생은 한때 영화 〈아리랑〉 감독이 나운규가 아닌 일본인이라는 일부의 주장에 반박, 사료를 통해 나운규가 감독이었음을 규명한 바 있다. 김연갑 선생은 40여 년간 아리랑문화 자료를 수집 및 정리하며 유네스코 기록유산 등재를 위해 노력해오고 있다.

토론회는 지난해 예비모임에서 ‘영화 〈아리랑〉 개봉백년기념사업회’ 공동위원장으로 거명된 김종원 선생과 김연갑 이사장을 추인하고 마쳤다.

Na Woon-gyu Film 〈Arirang〉 Centennial Commemoration, Preparatory Committee Takes First Step

Next year, October 1, 2026, will mark the 100th anniversary of the release of director Na Woon-gyu's film 〈Arirang〉. Discussions have begun on organizing an organization and preparing a commemorative event to commemorate this. On the afternoon of the 24th, 15 cultural figures gathered in the conference room of Taehwa Christian Church in Insa-dong and held a discussion.

In the film field, senior film critic Kim Jong-won, director of the film research institute Han Sang-eon, and film actress Lee Young-eun participated; in the traditional Korean music field, Arirang Association Chairman Kim Yeon-gap, National Gugak Center Director Kim Jung-hyun, Irarang researcher Kim Mi-yang participated; in the cultural planning field, record producer and artist Lee Moo-seong, ICT expert and Hansung University professor Jeon Wan-sik, director (bunsa) Jang Gwang-pal, broadcast writer Kim Gyeong-sun, World Arirang Road Promotion Group Sponsorship Chairman Lee Chang-gu participated; and in the inter-Korean exchange field, Seoul Arirang Preservation Association Chairman Yoo Myung-ok and former Dongguk University professor Park Sang-jin, director of the Traditional Korean Music Research Institute, participated.

Mr. Kim Jong-won, who served as the moderator, said in his speech that the discussion commemorating the 100th anniversary of the opening was timely and revealed the main body of the organizing committee.

“The movie 〈Arirang〉 became a ‘national film’ and its theme song became a ‘song of the people.’ However, while the movie “Arirang” remains a legend in history without film, its theme song became a song sung by people from both the South and the North, as well as the world, as the representative of all Arirang, ‘Bonjo Arirang.’ Furthermore, it became a song of humanity when it was sung at the UNESCO World Heritage site of ‘Korean Lyrical Folk Song Arirang’ in 2012. I think that the subject of this centennial commemorative project should be led by the Korean traditional music industry rather than the film industry.”

Then, during the discussion of forming a unified team between the South and the North in 1990, Kim Kyung-woong, who worked at the Ministry of Unification, and Lee Chang-gu, who had extensive practical experience in civilian inter-Korean exchange, made diagnoses about the possibility of exchange. However, both were pessimistic. “The primary goal of the exchange, holding mutual visit events, is realistically impossible. Therefore, the only way is to have North Korea participate in a third country or hold them differently and exchange the results.”

Regarding this, Chairman Kim Yeon-gap said that he plans to discuss this issue with the Chinese Korean community in June, and stated that “this should be an important issue in order to realize the following: an academic conference on the reevaluation of the film 〈Arirang〉 and Na Un-gyu, an exhibition of related literature, an exchange screening of the South-North remake of 〈Arirang〉 the erection of a monument to the miracle in the birthplace of Hoeryong and the opening ceremony of Dansungsa, and jointly re-registering 〈Arirang〉 as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which was registered differently in 2012 and 2014.”

Director Kim Jung-hyun of the National Gugak Center and Professor Jeon Wan-sik of Hansung University, who have been preparatory members of this group since last year, made very realistic statements. In short, they argued that the commemorative project should not end as a one-time event, and that the momentum should be secured through this commemorative project to expand and develop it into a “World Arirang Road” with a sustainable outlook and to be incorporated.

Upon receiving this, Chairman Kim Yeon-gap said, “Even so, there are organizations in the film industry such as the Korean Film Archive, the Korean Film Council, and the Chunsa International Film Festival Committee, so I expect cooperation.” He added that they should invite practitioners from these organizations to the second discussion.

The area that drew much attention at this discussion was the area of ​​inter-Korean exchange. First, Director Han Sang-eon stated that North Korea “highly evaluated Na Un-gyu and the film Arirang in the cell education document called ‘The Educational Book of Film Circle Members’ in 1949,” and that it may have been evaluated ahead of others because there was no pro-Japanese collusion in the Hoeryong area.

Professor Kim Mi-yang then asserted, “North Korea used the slogan ‘Arirang Minjok’ in the first scene of the ‘Arirang Festival’ in early 2000. In materials released during this period, it was revealed that all of the Arirang originated from the film 〈Arirang〉. In this regard, it is expected that North Korea will definitely hold this 100th anniversary event in some form.”

And in the field of inter-Korean exchange, Director Kim Kyung-woong, who worked at the Ministry of National Unification (now the Ministry of Unification) during the process of the agreement on the unified team between the two Koreas and has a deep interest in inter-Korean cultural exchange, said in a phone call, “Even in the midst of political chaos, the 100th anniversary is also a stroke of luck for those living in this era. North Korea will not just let this go, so I hope that this centennial anniversary of the release will become an opportunity for exchange.”

Meanwhile, the main figures of this discussion, Professor Kim Jong-won and Director Kim Yeon-gap, are experts in this field who served as vice-chairmen and secretary of the Film Arirang Research Association together with Director Yu Hyun-mok 30 years ago. Professor Kim Jong-won once refuted some claims that the director of the film 〈Arirang〉 was not Na Un-gyu but a Japanese person, and proved through historical materials that Na Un-gyu was the director. Professor Kim Yeon-gap has been collecting and organizing Arirang cultural materials for 40 years and has been working to have it registered as a UNESCO documentary heritage.

The discussion ended with the endorsement of Mr. Kim Jong-won and Chairman Kim Yeon-gap, who were named as co-chairs of the ‘Arirang Movie Centennial Commemoration Project Committee’ at the preliminary meeting last year.
