K-문화로 세계에서 급부상하고 있는 한국. 문화는 그 나라의 발전상을 대변하는데 한국은 다양하고 우수한 콘텐츠로 진가를 발휘하고 있다. 이 밑바탕을 이루기 위해서는 창작과 교육의 중요성을 언급하지 않을 수 없고, 해당 과제를 위해 서울에는 5개의 권역별 문화예술교육센터가 조성되어 있다. 이곳에서는 각 장르의 특성을 고려한 교육과 창작, 향유가 유기적으로 이뤄진다. 2016년 서남권 문화예술교육센터로 개관한 서울문화예술교육센터 양천(시각, 음악, 무용, 융합을 다루며 어린이, 가족, 시민 모두가 함께하는 예술교육 전용 공간)을 시작으로 2020년 도심권 서울문화예술교육센터 용산(문학, 음악, 시각을 다루며 시민의 일상이 예술과 어우러지는 예술교육 공간)이 마련되었다. 

이어서 2024년에는 동북권에 서울문화예술교육센터 강북(전통예술, 연극, 뮤지컬을 다루며 나의 이야기가 무대가 되는 예술교육 공간)과 동남권에 서초(음악을 다루며 예술가와 시민을 매개하는 음악 특화 예술교육 공간)가 각각 개관했다. 2025년 올해 5개 센터 중 마지막으로 서울문화예술교육센터(서울무용창작센터, SDCC) 은평이 9월 4일 개관식을 가졌다. 서울시 은평구 수색로에 마련된 이곳은 서울시와 서울문화재단이 시민이면 누구나 양질의 문화예술 향유와 교육 기회를 일상에서 누릴 수 있도록 5개의 권역별 문화예술교육센터를 조성, 운영하는 가운데 무용이 마지막을 장식한 것이다. 마지막이라는 의미도 있지만 지역 기반 문화예술교육센터의 새로운 전환점을 마련하는 중요한 결실이라는 점에서 그 의의도 컸다.

SDCC는 서북권을 거점으로 하는 ‘무용’ 특화 공간이며 국내 최초의 무용 전용 공공 공연장이기도 하다. 서울시와 대한무용협회의 의뢰로 (사)한국춤문화자료원의 최해리 이사장을 중심으로 연구원들이 타당성 조사의 연구용역을 받아 센터에 대한 전반적인 내용과 설계를 마친 후, 첫 삽을 떴다. 이후 구체적인 절차를 밟아가며 완성된 센터는 여러 무용 장르의 특성을 수용할 수 있도록 설계된 가변형 블랙박스 극장이다. 공연장 내부는 가로 15m, 세로 24m, 높이 9m 규모로 총 256석이며 다양한 무대연출과 예술적 몰입이 가능케 하는 공간감을 갖췄다. 더불어 댄스스튜디오 1과 2, 편의시설로 1층 로비에 카페와 물품보관함, 4층에 가족수유실을 마련했다. 

예술의 나라인 프랑스 같은 경우 이미 1970년대에 예술 정책의 일환으로 국립 안무센터(CNDC) 설립을 지원하기 시작했고, 이를 통해 현대무용의 교육과 창작 인프라가 제도적으로 마련되었다. 이에 비하면 50년이나 늦게 무용 전용 센터를 갖게 된 것이 아쉽기도 하지만 지금이라도 무용 전용 공간의 중요성이 인식되고 자리를 잡게 된 것이 다행이기도 하다. 개관식 행사에는 박상원 서울문화재단 이사장, 송형종 서울문화재단 대표이사, 이창기 서울시 문화수석, 조남규 대한무용협회 이사장, 국회의원과 시, 구의원, 무용계 인사들이 참여해 자리를 빛냈다. 사회는 발레리나 김주원이 맡았고 현대무용, 발레, 한국무용 공연을 선보였으며 2부에는 로비에 리셉션 자리를 마련해 방문한 사람들끼리 장소도 둘러보고 담소의 시간도 가졌다.

SDDC에서는 ‘Eevery Body, Every One:세상 모든 움직임을 위한, 단 하나의 무대’라는 주제로 마련된 개관페스티벌이 9월에서 12월까지 열릴 예정이다. 개관페스티벌에서 서울문화예술교육센터 은평은 ‘움직임의 언어로 세상을 바라보는’ 예술공간으로써 나이, 성별, 경험, 취향과 상관없이 몸은 고유의 스토리텔링과 4개월간의 페스티벌 동안 하나의 예술로 피어날 것이다. 센터에서는 공연과 교육이 함께 이뤄지며 공연으로는 안은미 컴퍼니의 〈드래곤즈〉, 고블린파티 〈세일(SALE)〉, 멜랑콜리 댄스컴퍼니 〈Og(제로그램)〉, 임정하 〈지금 이 공연〉, 아하무브먼트 〈음-파〉, 오!마이라이프 무브먼트 씨어터 〈이토록 무르익은 기적〉, 〈서울댄스스테이지-트리플 빌〉, 제46회 서울무용제, 국립현대무용단 〈청, 연〉이 이뤄진다. 

교육으로는 〈최태지의 발레 클래스: 무대와 삶 사이〉, 현대무용가 김호연과 우박스튜디오(유현주, 박지윤)가 함께하는 〈춤추는 도깨비들〉, 한국무용가 장혜림이 진행하는 〈몸짓으로 타오르다〉, 현대무용가 홍승엽과 윤혜정의 〈몸으로 예술놀이〉, 현대무용가 밝넝쿨, 인정주, 배혜진의 〈가족과 함께하는 이토록 무르익은 기적〉, 메디컬 바레 디렉터인 이가람의 프로그램 〈당신의 움직임을 예술로, 메디컬 바레〉, 발레강사 최정아가 진행하는 〈어린이 기초 발레〉가 이뤄진다. 이밖에 공동기획 작품 공연연계 프로그램으로 ‘보는 것’과 ‘배우는 것’의 경계를 허물며 무용의 즐거움을 함께 나누고자 하고, 서울문화예술교육 지원사업(공간연계형)도 진행한다. 또한 청소년을 위해 〈2025 피어나다 프로젝트〉를 현대무용가 김남식이 진행하는데, 워크숍은 교육 프로그램과 쇼케이스 공연, 결과물인 전시로 펼쳐질 예정이다.

무용계는 그동안 무용전용극장과 국립무용원을 꿈꿔왔다. 국립무용원으로 가는 초석이 될 수도 있을 이번 센터의 마련은 완벽하지는 않지만 과거 현대무용만 국립단체가 없다가 국립현대무용단이 마련되었던 것처럼 무용전용극장을 원했던 무용인들에게 중요한 창작과 교육의 터전이 생기며 꿈을 이룬 것이다. 특히 무용에 특화된 예술교육 프로그램을 운영할 예정이며 예술 창작, 교육, 향유가 선순환하는 기반을 다지고자 하는 의지가 굳건하기에 반가운 마음이 크다. 더불어 송형종 대표이사가 밝혔듯이 서울시가 시민의 문화 향유권 확대와 예술교육의 공공성 강화를 위해 지속적인 정책적 노력을 해왔고, 서울문화재단 역시 예술인의 창작 활동과 시민 참여 기반의 문화 생태계를 조성하기 위해 책임감 있게 함께하겠다고 다짐한 만큼 무용인들 모두는 서울무용창작센터가 추후 무용이 세계로 뻗어나가는 성장의 마중물의 역할을 충실히 하길 바라는 마음이 크다.

Seoul Dance Creation Center: A Place Where the Purpose of "Everybody, Everyone" Comes to Life

Korea is rapidly rising globally with its K-culture. Culture reflects a country's development, and Korea is truly showcasing its value with diverse and outstanding content. To build this foundation, the importance of creation and education cannot be overlooked. To this end, Seoul has established five regional cultural arts education centers. These centers organically foster education, creation, and enjoyment, each tailored to the specific characteristics of each genre. Starting with the Seoul Culture and Arts Education Center Yangcheon, which opened in 2016 as the Southwestern Cultural Arts Education Center (a dedicated arts education space for children, families, and the public, covering visual arts, music, dance, and convergence), the Seoul Culture and Arts Education Center Yongsan, a downtown area center, opened in 2020 (a space for arts education that combines literature, music, and visual arts, and where citizens' daily lives are intertwined with art).

Following this, the Seoul Culture and Arts Education Center Gangbuk (a space for arts education featuring traditional arts, theater, and musicals, where personal stories become the stage) in the Northeastern region and the Seocho (a music-focused arts education space that focuses on music and connects artists and the public) in the Southeastern region opened in 2024. The Seoul Culture and Arts Education Center (Seoul Dance Creation Center, SDCC) Eunpyeong, the last of the five centers scheduled for 2025, held its opening ceremony on September 4th. Located on Susaek-ro in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, this center marks the final stop for dance in the five regional cultural arts education centers established and operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture to ensure that all citizens have access to quality cultural and artistic experiences and educational opportunities. While this is the final milestone, it is also significant as it marks a new turning point for regional cultural arts education centers.

SDCC is a dance-focused space based in the northwestern region and is Korea's first public dance-only performance venue. Commissioned by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Korean Dance Association, researchers led by Choi Hae-ri, Director of the Korean Dance Archives, conducted a feasibility study and completed the overall design and construction of the center. Groundbreaking ceremony followed. The center, which was completed through detailed procedures, is a flexible black box theater designed to accommodate various dance genres. The performance hall measures 15 meters wide, 24 meters long, and 9 meters high, seating a total of 256. Its spacious interior allows for diverse stage productions and artistic immersion. Additionally, it features Dance Studios 1 and 2, a café and lockers in the first-floor lobby, and a family nursing room on the fourth floor.

France, a nation steeped in art, began supporting the establishment of the National Choreography Center (CNDC) as part of its arts policy in the 1970s, establishing a systematic infrastructure for modern dance education and creation. While it's regrettable that a dedicated dance center was established 50 years later, it's also encouraging that the importance of a dedicated dance space has been recognized and established. The opening ceremony was graced by Park Sang-won, Chairman of the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture; Song Hyung-jong, CEO of the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture; Lee Chang-ki, Senior Secretary to the President for Culture for the Seoul Metropolitan Government; Cho Nam-gyu, Chairman of the Korean Dance Association; members of the National Assembly, city and district council members, and figures from the dance community. Ballerina Kim Joo-won hosted the event, which featured performances of modern dance, ballet, and Korean traditional dance. The second half of the event featured a reception in the lobby, where attendees could explore the venue and socialize.

SDDC's inaugural festival, themed "Ever Body, Every One: A Single Stage for Every Movement in the World," will run from September to December. The Seoul Arts & Culture Education Center Eunpyeong will be an art space dedicated to "viewing the world through the language of movement," where the body, regardless of age, gender, experience, or taste, will be able to tell its own unique story and blossom into a work of art over the four-month festival. The center offers a combination of performances and educational programs. Performances include Ahn Eun-mi Company's 〈Dragons〉, Goblin Party's 〈SALE〉 Melancholy Dance Company's 〈Og (Zerograms)〉, Lim Jeong-ha's 〈Now This Performance〉, A-Ha Movement's 〈Um-Pa〉, Oh! My Life Movement Theater's 〈A Miracle So Ripe〉, Seoul Dance Stage - Triple Bill, the 46th Seoul Dance Festival, and the National Dance Company of Korea's 〈Cheong, Yeon〉. 

The educational programs include 〈Choi Tae-ji’s Ballet Class: Between Stage and Life〉, 〈Dancing Goblins〉 with contemporary dancer Kim Ho-yeon and Woobox Studio (Yoo Hyun-joo, Park Ji-yoon), 〈Burning with Gestures〉 with Korean dancer Jang Hye-rim, 〈Art Play with the Body〉 with contemporary dancers Hong Seung-yeop and Yoon Hye-jeong, 〈A Miracle So Ripe with Family〉 with contemporary dancers Bbaekneungkul, In Jeong-ju, and Bae Hye-jin, 〈Medical Barre, Your Movements as Art〉 with medical barre director Lee Garam, and 〈Children’s Basic Ballet〉 with ballet instructor Choi Jeong-ah. In addition, the program aims to share the joy of dance by breaking down the barriers between 〈watching〉 and 〈learning〉 through performance-linked programs of jointly planned works, and the Seoul Arts and Culture Education Support Project (space-linked type) is also in operation. Additionally, contemporary dancer Kim Nam-sik will lead the 〈2025 Blooming Project〉 for youth. Workshops will be combined with educational programs, showcase performances, and exhibitions.

The dance community has long dreamed of a dedicated dance theater and the National Dance Institute. While not perfect, this center, which could serve as a cornerstone toward a National Dance Institute, will provide a vital foundation for creative and educational endeavors for dancers who longed for a dedicated dance theater, much like the National Contemporary Dance Company was established when there was no national contemporary dance organization. This fulfillment of this dream is particularly welcome, as it will offer a dedicated arts education program specifically for dance, demonstrating a strong commitment to fostering a virtuous cycle of artistic creation, education, and enjoyment. As CEO Song Hyeong-jong stated, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has made continuous policy efforts to expand citizens' right to enjoy culture and strengthen the public nature of arts education, and the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture has also pledged to work together responsibly to create a cultural ecosystem based on artists' creative activities and citizen participation. All dancers have great hopes that the Seoul Dance Creation Center will faithfully play the role of a catalyst for the growth of dance as it expands into the world.
