2024년 12월 1일, 대전시립연정국악원 대극장에서 한국 전통춤의 전설, 김천흥 선생의 예술적 유산을 기리는 무대가 열린다. 정은혜민족무용단의 창작공연 〈김천흥 무악의 법고창신〉은 전통춤을 재해석하며 현대적 감각으로 풀어낸 작품이다. 이번 공연은 김천흥 선생의 업적과 한국 전통춤의 가치를 되새기는 장이 될 것이다.

김천흥(心韶, 1909-2007) 선생은 조선의 마지막 무동으로 궁중무용과 민속춤을 망라하며 한국 춤사위의 정수를 남긴 인물이다. 그는 일제강점기부터 광복과 6.25 전쟁에 이르는 격동의 역사 속에서도 한국 전통 예술을 지켜내며 전승의 주춧돌을 놓았다. 선생의 열정은 궁중춤인 춘앵전과 일무, 그리고 민속춤인 처용무와 학춤 등으로 집대성되었고 그가 작성한 14편의 『무형문화재 조사보고서』는 오늘날 많은 춤이 국가무형유산으로 지정되는 밑거름이 되었다.

정은혜무용단은 38년 동안 김천흥 선생의 춤 유산을 현대와 접목하며 ‘법고창신’의 정신을 실천해 왔다. 이번 무대는 김천흥의 춤사위에 깃든 역사적·예술적 의미를 현대적 시각으로 재구성하며 춤의 전통이 동시대와 미래를 잇는 다리임을 보여줄 것이다. 특히, 이번 공연에서는 일무, 춘앵전, 처용무, 학춤을 중심으로 김천흥 선생의 춤 철학과 창작혼을 담아 새로운 해석을 시도한다.

김천흥 선생은 단순히 전통을 전승한 것을 넘어 창작의 세계를 개척한 인물로도 평가받는다. 그는 〈만파식적〉과 〈처용랑〉 같은 독창적 작품을 남겼고 춤과 음악, 의례와 예술을 융합하는 새로운 경지를 개척했다. 그의 제자였던 정은혜는 김천흥 선생의 학춤을 중심으로 한 공연과 강습회를 40여 년간 이어오며 춤맥을 확고히 다져왔다. 특히, 김천흥 선생이 충남대학교에서 양성한 처용무 이수자들과 함께 한국춤의 전승을 미래 세대로 확대하고 있다.

On December 1, 2024, a stage commemorating the artistic legacy of Kim Cheon-heung, a legendary figure in Korean traditional dance, will take place at the Daejeon Municipal Yeonjeong Korean Music Center’s Grand Theater. The creative performance “Kim Cheon-heung’s Dance: Beopgochangshin” by the Jung Eunhae Dance Company reinterprets traditional dance with a modern sensibility. This performance seeks to revisit the achievements of Kim Cheon-heung and reflect on the value of Korean traditional dance.

Kim Cheon-heung (心韶, 1909–2007) was the last court dancer of the Joseon Dynasty and a master who embodied the essence of Korean traditional dance, encompassing both court and folk dance. Through the turbulent history of Japanese colonial rule, liberation, and the Korean War, he steadfastly preserved and transmitted Korean traditional arts. His dedication culminated in works such as the court dances Chunaengjeon and Ilmu, as well as the folk dances Cheoyongmu and Hakchum. The 14 intangible cultural heritage research reports he authored laid the foundation for many dances to be designated as national intangible cultural heritage.

For 38 years, the Jung Eunhae Dance Company has continued to embody the spirit of “Beopgochangshin” by connecting Kim Cheon-heung’s dance legacy to modernity. This performance reconstructs the historical and artistic significance of Kim Cheon-heung’s choreography with a contemporary perspective, highlighting the role of traditional dance as a bridge between the present and the future. In particular, the performance will reinterpret Ilmu, Chunaengjeon, Cheoyongmu, and Hakchum with a focus on Kim Cheon-heung’s dance philosophy and creative spirit.

Kim Cheon-heung was not only a preserver of tradition but also a pioneer of new creative realms. His works, such as Manpashikjeok and Cheoyongrang, broke new ground by merging dance, music, rituals, and artistry. His disciple, Jung Eunhae, has carried forward his legacy by promoting Hakchum through performances and workshops for over 40 years, solidifying the continuity of this dance tradition. Notably, Kim Cheon-heung fostered Cheoyongmu practitioners at Chungnam National University, ensuring that the dance’s heritage is passed on to future generations.

This performance offers audiences a profound opportunity to experience the roots of Korean dance and to witness the harmony between tradition and innovation. Through the Beopgochangshin spirit of 2024, the Jung Eunhae Dance Company will present Kim Cheon-heung’s artistic legacy and explore the possibilities of its modern reinterpretation.
