‘한 번의 선택, 단 한 번의 기회’ 평론가의 눈으로 선별된 안무가들의 작품이 무대에 오른다. 무용전문지 월간 댄스포럼이 주최하는 ‘크리틱스초이스댄스페스티벌’(이하 크리틱스초이스)은 올해로 28회를 맞이했다. 7월 12일부터 8월 3일까지 서울 대학로 아르코예술극장 대극장 및 연습실, 서울예술인지원센터 세미나룸에서 공연과 다양한 부대행사로 펼쳐진다.

한국무용, 현대무용, 발레… 8인의 안무가 신작 발표

올해 무대에는 총 8명의 안무가가 참여해 한국무용 3편, 현대무용 4편, 발레 1편의 신작을 선보인다. 특히 국립무용단 소속 박수윤, 박소영 단원이 나란히 초청되어 안무 데뷔작을 발표한다는 점에서 눈길을 끈다.

박수윤의 〈길티( )풀(Guilty( )ful)〉은 ‘길티플레저’라는 개념을 중심으로 본능과 규율 사이에서 진동하는 인간의 갈등과 쾌락을 섬세하게 풀어낸다. 박소영의 〈찬란한 침잠〉은 인생의 한순간이 찬란하게 침잠해가는 여정을 따라가며 한국무용의 어법으로 생의 내면을 해석한다.

현대무용 부문에서는 에든버러프린지페스티벌에서 주목받은 김민 안무가가 눈에 띈다. 김민은 2022년 영국 가디언지가 선정한 ‘꼭 봐야 할 50개의 공연’에 이름을 올린 바 있으며 이번에는 마술과 무용을 접목한 〈라이트 인 더 베이스먼트〉를 발표한다. 또한 작년 최우수안무자로 선정된 유민경은 신작 〈바디 레시피〉를 통해 일상 속 신체에 대한 질문을 던지며 관객과 만난다.

지역 무용계에서 활발히 활동 중인 방지선은 인공지능과 공존에 대한 화두를 〈메타: 공존의 경계〉로 펼쳐낸다. 차지은은 한강의 『소년이 온다』를 모티프로 공동체의 상처와 기억을 무대화한 〈Dance No.3 풍덩〉을 선보인다. 한국무용 기반 안무가 권미정은 작년 〈먹이〉에 이어 이번에는 늙음과 병듦을 주제로 한 〈한 살〉을 발표한다.

이번 페스티벌에서 오랜만에 모습을 드러낸 장르는 발레다. 무려 5년 만에 초청된 발레 안무가는 해니쉬발레 대표 이해니로 그는 닭의 뼈로 화석화된 미래 사회를 상상하며 인류세와 생태 문제를 소재로 한 실험적인 발레 작품 〈꼬끼-오〉를 발표한다.

안무가와 함께하는 관객 소통 프로그램 운영

크리틱스초이스는 단순히 공연 발표에 그치지 않는다. 매 공연 첫날에는 ‘관객과의 대화’가 마련되어 안무가가 무대 위에서 작품의 배경과 창작 과정을 직접 설명한다. 발레 무용가 김유미(7.23.-24.), 홍보담당자 한선아(7.26.-27.), 무용평론가 윤대성(7.30.-31.), 현대무용가 정철인(8.23.)이 무대에 올라 공연 감상에 대한 다양한 관점을 보여주며 공연 해설자로 함께한다. 

이외에도 부대 프로그램으로 ‘공연 밀착 움직임 클래스’와 평론가, 기획자, 드라마터그가 함께하는 ‘크리틱스네트워크’도 준비되어 있다. 안무가 8인의 신작을 미리 배워보는 클래스는 아르코예술극장 연습실에서 7월 12일부터 20일까지 주말마다 열린다. 자유 참가자들이 함께 작품을 이야기하는 ‘크리틱스네트워크’는 7월 26일, 서울예술인지원센터에서 개최된다.

이번 제28회 크리틱스초이스에는 국립무용단, 국립현대무용단, 천안시립무용단 등 공공단체 무용수는 물론, 엠넷 〈스테이지 파이터〉 출연 무용수들까지 총 80여 명이 무대에 선다. 장르와 배경을 넘나드는 구성은 본 축제의 가장 큰 매력 중 하나다.

1998년 시작된 크리틱스초이스는 189명의 안무가를 무대에 올려왔다. 지금 무용계 중심에서 활발히 활동 중인 장혜림, 김보람, 정보경, 차진엽 등도 이 무대에서 처음 주목을 받았다. 2025년의 무용계 트렌드를 한눈에 조망할 수 있는 이번 축제는 젊은 무용가들의 창작 에너지를 관객에게 전하고 있다.

A chance to see choreographers selected by critics, from the National Dance Company's newcomers!

‘One choice, one chance’ Choreographers’ works selected by the eyes of critics will be presented on stage. The ‘Critics’ Choice Dance Festival’ (hereafter referred to as Critics’ Choice), hosted by the dance magazine Dance Forum, is in its 28th year this year. It will be held from July 12 to August 3 at the Arko Arts Theater Grand Theater and Practice Room in Daehangno, Seoul, and the Seoul Arts Support Center Seminar Room with performances and various side events.

Korean dance, modern dance, ballet… 8 choreographers present new works

A total of 8 choreographers will participate in this year’s stage, presenting 3 Korean dance pieces, 4 modern dance pieces, and 1 ballet piece. In particular, the fact that Park Soo-yoon and Park So-young, members of the National Dance Company of Korea, were invited together to present their choreographic debuts is noteworthy.

Park Soo-yoon's 〈Guilty ( )ful〉 delicately unravels the human conflict and pleasure that oscillates between instinct and discipline, focusing on the concept of "guilty pleasure." Park So-young's 〈Splendid Immersion〉 follows the journey of a moment in life becoming brilliantly immersed, interpreting the inner self of life using the language of Korean dance.

In the contemporary dance category, choreographer Kim Min, who received attention at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, stands out. Kim Min was named one of the "50 Must-See Performances" selected by the Guardian in the UK in 2022, and this time, she will present 〈Light in the Basement〉 which combines magic and dance. In addition, Yoo Min-kyung, who was selected as the best choreographer last year, meets the audience by asking questions about the body in everyday life through her new work 〈Body Recipe〉.

Bang Ji-seon, who is actively working in the local dance scene, presents the topic of coexistence with artificial intelligence in 〈Meta: The Boundary of Coexistence〉. Cha Ji-eun presents 〈Dance No.3 Pungdung〉, which is based on Han Kang’s 『Human Acts』 and depicts the wounds and memories of the community. Kwon Mi-jeong, a choreographer based on Korean dance, presents 〈One Year〉, which deals with the theme of aging and illness, following 〈Eat〉 last year.

The genre that has made an appearance at this festival after a long time is ballet. The ballet choreographer who has been invited for the first time in five years is Haeni Lee, the head of Haenish Ballet. He imagines a future society fossilized into chicken bones and presents 〈Kkokki-o〉, an experimental ballet piece based on the Anthropocene and ecological issues.

Operating an audience communication program with choreographers

Critics’ Choice does not simply present performances. On the first day of each performance, a ‘Conversation with the Audience’ is held, where the choreographer directly explains the background and creative process of the work on stage. Ballet dancer Kim Yu-mi (7.23-24), PR manager Han Seon-ah (7.26-27), dance critic Yoon Dae-sung (7.30-31), and modern dancer Jeong Cheol-in (8.23) will take the stage to provide various perspectives on performance appreciation and will join as performance commentators.

In addition, there are also ‘Performance-Intensive Movement Class’ and ‘Critics Network’ with critics, planners, and dramaturgs as side programs. Classes to learn new works by eight choreographers in advance will be held every weekend from July 12 to 20 at the Arko Arts Theater practice room. ‘Critics Network’, where free participants discuss works together, will be held on July 26 at the Seoul Arts Support Center.

The 28th Critics' Choice will feature a total of 80 dancers, including dancers from public organizations such as the National Dance Company, National Contemporary Dance Company, and Cheonan City Dance Company, as well as dancers from Mnet's 〈Stage Fighter〉. The composition that crosses genres and backgrounds is one of the biggest attractions of this festival.

Since its launch in 1998, Critics' Choice has brought 189 choreographers to the stage. Jang Hye-rim, Kim Bo-ram, Jeong Bo-gyeong, and Cha Jin-yeop, who are currently active in the center of the dance world, also first gained attention on this stage. This festival, which allows a glimpse into the dance trends of 2025, is conveying the creative energy of young dancers to the audience.

Tickets can be reserved on the Arko·Daehakro Arts Theater website (theater.arko.or.kr) and Nolticket (formerly Interpark), and some side events can be attended by making a reservation in advance.
