2025년 8월 15일부터 21일까지 독일 베를린에서 한국의 전통 공연과 컨템퍼러리댄스가 어우러진 특별한 야류회 ‘탈&춤’이 열린다. 이번 행사는 광복 80주년, 파독 광부·간호사 인력파견 60주년을 기념하기 위해 독일의 한국문화원(원장 양상근)이 주최하며, 공연기획 MCT(대표 전홍기)가 기획을 맡으면서 공연기획 MCT 창립 30주년의 의미까지 더하였다. 예술단은 장승헌 예술감독(공연기획 MCT)을 중심으로 연출가 박호빈(제로포인트모션 대표), 음악감독 이민후(천하제일탈공작소), 현대무용가 장은정, 한국무용가 황희연, 탈꾼 허창열과 이주원 등 다양한 분야의 예술가들로 꾸려진다.


‘탈&춤’은 단순히 기념일을 강조하는 의례성 공연이 아닌, 시공간을 넘나들고 예술적 서사를 품은 문화 행사로 기획되었다. 행사는 유럽의 관객들에게 한국문화의 정체성과 예술적 깊이를 전달하겠다는 목적으로, 유네스코 인류무형문화유산으로 등재된 ‘탈춤’을 중심으로 전통춤과 연희, 현대무용이 어우러지는 복합예술로 얼개를 구성하였다. 이에 따라 〈비나리〉, 〈고성오광대 문둥북춤〉, 〈봉산탈춤〉, 〈하회탈춤〉, 〈산조춤〉, 〈덧배기춤〉 등 전통 공연의 주요 레퍼토리를 바탕으로 한국 고유의 ‘흥’과 ‘신명’의 무대가 펼쳐진다. 여기에 장은정 안무가의 컨템퍼러리댄스 〈무엇이 되어〉가 더해져 정형성과 즉흥성, 전통성과 현대성이 공존하는 무대가 완성된다. 부대행사로 재독 한인 무용가들을 대상으로 ‘가무악워크숍’도 진행한다.







행사는 총 3차례 이루어진다. 8월 15일 베를린의 유서 깊은 메트로폴(Metropol) 공연장에서의 개막을 시작으로 8월 17일 UFA 리퍼블릭 야외극장에서 두 번째 무대가 펼쳐지고, 마지막 8월 21일 폐막 무대는 〈당신은 지금 베를린에 살고 있군요〉(가제)가 장식한다. 특히 마지막 공연은 장은정 안무가의 히트작 〈당신은 지금 바베레따에 살고 있군요〉의 베를린판이라 할 수 있으며, 독일 한인 커뮤니티와 공동 창작무대로 선보일 예정이다.


메트로폴 공연장은 1905년 지어진 베를린의 대표적 예술공간으로 오페레타와 연극, 영화관, 콘서트홀, 클럽 등 다양한 장르가 공존해 온 장소다. 한국의 전통예술이 이 무대 위에 오르는 것은 단순한 해외 공연을 넘어 예술의 시간성과 장소성을 교차시키는 상징적인 사건이 될 것이다. 특히 야외극장 무대(UFA 리퍼블릭 야외극장)에서의 공연은 탈춤의 공공성과 연희적 성격이 더욱 도드라질 것으로 기대된다. 이는 한국 전통예술의 확장성과 열린 구조를 해외 관객에게 자연스럽게 전달하는 효과를 만들어낼 것이다.

A splendid German night performance for the 80th anniversary of liberation, the 60th anniversary of the miners and nurses in Germany, and the 30th anniversary of MCT: 2025 Korea in Focus ‘Tal & Dance’

From August 15 to 21, 2025, a special night performance ‘Tal & Dance’ combining traditional Korean performances and contemporary dances will be held in Berlin, Germany. This event is hosted by the Korean Cultural Center in Germany (Director Yang Sang-geun) to commemorate the 80th anniversary of liberation and the 60th anniversary of the dispatch of miners and nurses to Germany. The performance planning company MCT (CEO Jeon Hong-gi) is in charge of planning, adding meaning to the 30th anniversary of the founding of the performance planning company MCT. The art troupe consists of artists from various fields, including artistic director Jang Seung-heon (Performance Planning MCT), director Park Ho-bin (CEO of Zero Point Motion), music director Lee Min-hu (Cheonhajeiltalgongjakso), modern dancer Jang Eun-jeong, Korean dancer Hwang Hee-yeon, and mask performers Heo Chang-yeol and Lee Joo-won.

‘Tal & Dance’ is not a ceremonial performance that simply emphasizes the anniversary, but a cultural event that transcends time and space and contains an artistic narrative. The event aims to convey the identity and artistic depth of Korean culture to European audiences, and is structured as a composite art combining traditional dance, performance, and modern dance centered around ‘Talchum’, which is registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Accordingly, based on the main repertoire of traditional performances such as 〈Binari〉, 〈Bongsan Talchum〉, 〈Hahoe Talchum〉, 〈Sanjo Dance〉, and 〈Deotbaegi Dance〉, a stage of unique Korean ‘excitement’ and ‘spirit’ will unfold. In addition, choreographer Jang Eun-jeong’s contemporary dance ‘What Becomes’ will be added, completing a stage where regularity and improvisation, tradition and modernity coexist. As a side event, a ‘Gamuak Workshop’ will be held for Korean dancers residing in Germany.

The event will be held three times in total. The opening ceremony will be held at the historic Metropol in Berlin on August 15, followed by the second stage at the UFA Republic Open Air Theater on August 17, and the final closing stage on August 21 will be decorated with 〈You Are Living in Berlin Now〉 (tentative title). In particular, the last performance can be said to be the Berlin version of choreographer Jang Eun-jeong’s hit work 〈You Are Living in Barberetta Now〉 and will be presented as a joint creation with the Korean community in Germany.

The Metropol is a representative art space in Berlin built in 1905, where various genres such as operetta, theater, movie theater, concert hall, and club coexist. The appearance of traditional Korean art on this stage will be a symbolic event that goes beyond a simple overseas performance and intersects the temporality and spatiality of art. In particular, the performance on the outdoor theater stage (UFA Republic Open Air Theater) is expected to further highlight the public nature and theatrical nature of talchum. This will create the effect of naturally conveying the expandability and open structure of Korean traditional arts to overseas audiences.

The ‘Tal & Dance’ event, which directly presents Korea’s unique body language and traditional spirit on the European stage through Talchum and dance, is a practical attempt to explore the possibility of ‘pure Hallyu’ and expand the scope of Hallyu into artistic depth. This special night festival that will decorate Berlin’s summer nights will present the current status of Korean performing arts that remembers, sympathizes, and opens new paths through dance.
