오는 9월 12일(금)과 13일(토), 복합문화공간에무에서 제7회 노박스댄스필름페스티벌(KNOWBOX Dance Film Festival, 이하 NBFF)이 관객을 맞이한다. 예술감독 최예진과 Martheya Nygaard가 이끄는 이번 페스티벌은 “Bodies in Motion: A Dance Film Celebration”이라는 주제로 몸을 아카이브, 저항, 언어, 예술로 바라보는 작품들을 통해 스크린 속 춤의 미학을 재발견한다.

2019년 출범 이후 “움직임을 기록하고, 춤을 확장한다”는 슬로건 아래 이어져 온 NBFF는 국내에서 보기 드문 댄스필름 전문 페스티벌로 무용 영상 콘텐츠의 저변을 넓히는 데 기여 해왔다. 7회를 맞은 올해는 대한민국, 미국, 호주, 이탈리아, 레바논, 노르웨이 등지에서 출품된 110여 편의 작품 가운데 8편이 최종 선정되었다.

움직이는 몸, 춤의 시네마-국제 및 국내 무용영화의 흐름을 만나다

올해 심사위원상은 무용영화 연구와 창작의 권위자로 꼽히는 더글러스 로젠버그(Douglas Rosenberg)의 신작 〈The Sea〉가 차지했다. 스웨덴 포뢰(Fårö) 섬 인근에서 촬영된 이 64분짜리 흑백 작품은 나이 듦과 고독 그리고 공동체의 의미를 탐구한다. 컨택 즉흥(Contact Improvisation) 듀엣을 중심으로 몸이 시간과 서사를 어떻게 품을 수 있는지를 보여주며 “명상적인 시선으로 사라져가는 서사를 그려냈다”는 평을 받았다.

한편, 베스트 퍼포먼스상은 국립현대무용단 제작작 〈Gravity of Living〉(각본·연출  허정재·윤희섭)이 선정되었다. 관객 심사위원 전하영은 “전세계 누군가는 겪고 있을 이 부부의 모든 여정을 어렵지 않고 뛰어난 전달력의 안무와 연기, 영상으로써 담아준 아티스트들에게 찬사를”이라고 평했다.

주목할 NBFF 2025 상영작

페스티벌의 개막은 세계적인 거장 빔 벤더스(Wim Wenders)의 대표작 〈피나(PINA)〉가 장식한다. 9월 12일 저녁 8시, 에무시네마 별빛영화제와 협력해 루프탑 야외 상영으로 진행되며 블루투스 헤드셋을 착용하는 특별한 방식이 관객에게 색다른 체험을 선사할 예정이다. 독일 현대무용의 전설 피나 바우쉬의 예술세계를 담아낸 이 작품은 노박스댄스필름페스티벌의 취지와도 맞닿아 있다.

9월 13일에는 움직임 워크숍 〈인생작: 영화에서 움직임으로〉, 국립현대무용단 〈Gravity of Living〉 상영, 더글러스 로젠버그의 〈The Sea〉 인터내셔널 프리미어, 모지민 낭독극 〈모어쇼〉 등 다채로운 프로그램이 이어진다.

스크린 속 춤, 한국을 넘어 세계로

NBFF는 이번 서울 개최를 시작으로 10월 멕시코시티 Cineteca Nacional, 11월 미국 텍사스 University of North Texas와 The Cedars Union으로 무대를 넓힌다. 한국에서 출발한 춤과 영화의 교류가 세계 각지에서 이어지며 글로벌 네트워크 속에서 댄스필름의 확장을 실현하는 것이다.

제7회 노박스댄스필름페스티벌은 관객이 ‘몸의 언어’를 오감으로 경험할 수 있는 특별한 축제를 예고한다. 무용과 영상 예술의 경계를 허물고 새로운 예술적 감각을 느낄 수 있는 이번 페스티벌은 관객에게 잊히지 않을 예술적 경험으로 남을 것이다.

The 7th KNOWBOX Dance Film Festival (NBFF) will welcome audiences at the Emu Complex Cultural Space on Friday, September 12th and Saturday, September 13th. Led by Artistic Directors Choi Ye-jin and Martheya Nygaard, the festival, themed "Bodies in Motion: A Dance Film Celebration," rediscovers the aesthetics of dance on screen through works that explore the body as archive, resistance, language, and art.

Since its launch in 2019, NBFF has continued under the slogan "Documenting Movement, Expanding Dance," contributing to the expansion of dance video content as a rare dance film festival in Korea. This year, in its seventh year, eight works were selected from approximately 110 submissions from countries including South Korea, the United States, Australia, Italy, Lebanon, and Norway.

Moving Bodies, Cinema of Dance-Exploring the Trends of International and Domestic Dance Films

This year's Jury Prize went to 〈The Sea〉, a new work by Douglas Rosenberg, a recognized authority on dance film research and creation. Filmed near the Swedish island of Fårö, this 64-minute black-and-white work explores aging, loneliness, and the meaning of community. Centered around a Contact Improvisation duet, it demonstrates how the body can embrace time and narrative, earning praise for "drawing a fading narrative with a meditative gaze."

Meanwhile, the Best Performance Award went to 〈Gravity of Living〉, a production by the Korea National Dance Company of Korea (KNDC) (written and directed by Heo Jung-jae and Yoon Hee-seop). Audience judge Jeon Ha-young praised the artists for "capturing the entire journey of this couple, a journey that anyone around the world would experience, with effortless and brilliant choreography, acting, and visuals."

Notable Films for NBFF 2025

The festival will open with 〈Pina〉, a masterpiece by world-renowned master Wim Wenders. On September 12th at 8 PM, in collaboration with the Emu Cinema Starlight Film Festival, the film will be screened outdoors on a rooftop. The unique experience of wearing Bluetooth headsets will provide audiences with a unique experience. This work, which captures the artistic world of German contemporary dance legend Pina Bausch, aligns with the spirit of the No Box Dance Film Festival.

On September 13th, a diverse program will follow, including the movement workshop 〈Life's Work: From Film to Movement〉, the screening of the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company's 〈Gravity of Living〉, the international premiere of Douglas Rosenberg's 〈The Sea〉 and Mojimin's reading play 〈More Show〉.

Dance on Screen: Beyond Korea, Globally

The NBFF will expand its reach to the Cineteca Nacional in Mexico City in October and the University of North Texas and The Cedars Union in November. The exchange between dance and film, which originated in Korea, will continue around the world, expanding dance film within a global network.

The 7th No Box Dance Film Festival promises a special festival where audiences can experience the "language of the body" with all five senses.
