(재)한국장애인문화예술원(이사장 방귀희)이 신경다양성(Neurodiversity) 어린이와 그 가족을 위한 참여형 무용 공연 〈야호야호 Echoing Dance〉(연출 김재리)를 오는 9월 13일(토)부터 21일(일)까지 모두예술극장에서 총 9회에 걸쳐 선보인다.

신경다양성은 발달장애, 자폐 스펙트럼, 지적장애, ADHD 등을 장애의 범주가 아닌 다양한 행동 양식으로 이해하는 개념이다. 이러한 특성을 지닌 어린이들은 기존의 공연 관람 방식에서 어려움을 겪는 경우가 많다. 이번 작품은 이 같은 인식을 바탕으로 신경다양성 어린이들이 감각적으로 안정된 환경에서 무대를 경험하고 직접 참여할 수 있도록 기획된 점에서 주목된다.

놀이와 무용이 만나는 무대

〈야호야호 Echoing Dance〉는 지난 6월 쇼케이스에서 확인된 관객 반응을 토대로 작품의 완성도를 한층 끌어올렸다. 당시 31가족, 83명이 참여한 쇼케이스에서는 “아이의 다름이 공연 안에서 존중받는 시간이었다”, “참여를 통해 극장에서 편안하게 공연을 즐길 수 있었다”는 평가가 이어졌다. 이러한 호평을 바탕으로 본 공연은 놀이의 감각적·유희적 특성을 중심에 두고 무대를 ‘가변 놀이터’로 설정하고 어린이들의 자발적 움직임이 자유롭게 펼쳐지도록 구성되었다.

또한 인공 오브제에서 나아가 바람, 빛, 종이 등 자연적인 재료를 활용하여 무대 환경을 확장했다. 여기에 즉흥적으로 연주되는 라이브 음악이 더해져 관객의 감각적 경험을 한층 풍부하게 완성한다.

공연을 넘어 교육 프로그램으로

이번 무대는 향후 ‘무용-놀이 수업’ 투어 프로그램과 워크북 제작으로 이어질 예정이다. ‘무용-놀이 수업’은 신경다양성 어린이와 예술가가 놀이를 통해 서로의 감각을 탐색하는 워크숍 프로그램으로 이번 공연의 창작 기반이 되었다. 모두예술극장은 이번 작품을 시작으로 신경다양성 어린이를 위한 공연을 지속적인 레퍼토리로 발전시킬 계획이다.

방귀희 이사장은 “〈야호야호 Echoing Dance〉는 ‘다름’을 존중하며 관객과의 새로운 소통 방식을 제안하는 공연”이라며 “앞으로도 신경다양성 관객을 위한 콘텐츠 창작과 유통을 지속적으로 확대해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

공연이 열리는 모두예술극장은 (재)한국장애인문화예술원이 서울 서대문구 충정로 구세군빌딩 아트홀을 전면 개보수하여 2023년 10월 새롭게 개관한 국내 첫 장애예술 표준공연장이다. 이는 2022년 수립된 ‘장애예술인 문화예술활동 지원 기본계획’의 일환으로 장애 예술가의 창작 촉진, 배리어프리 공연 활성화, 장애예술인 및 단체에 대한 우선 대관 및 사용료 할인 등을 통해 장애예술인의 문화예술 활동 기회를 넓혀가고 있다.

이번 〈야호야호 Echoing Dance〉는 모두예술극장이 지향하는 장애예술을 위한 새로운 무대 환경의 가능성을 보여주는 시도가 될 것으로 기대된다. 또한, 관객이 단순히 바라보는 존재가 아니라 함께 움직이고 놀이하는 동료로서 참여한다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 특히 신경다양성 어린이를 둔 가족뿐 아니라 무용이 지닌 확장 가능성에 관심 있는 관객들에게도 새로운 경험이 될 것이다. 무용을 ‘보는 예술’에서 ‘함께하는 경험’으로 확장하는 이번 시도를 통해서 무용이 사회적 다양성과 어떻게 호흡하는지 직접 확인할 수 있는 기회가 될 수 있을 것이다.

The Korea Disabled Arts and Culture Institute (Chairman Bang Gwi-hee) will present 〈Yaho Yaho Echoing Dance〉 a participatory dance performance for neurodiverse children and their families (directed by Kim Jae-ri), for a total of nine performances at the Modu Arts Theater from Saturday, September 13th to Sunday, September 21st.

Neurodiversity is a concept that understands developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities, and ADHD as diverse behavioral patterns rather than individual disabilities. Children with these characteristics often face challenges in traditional performance formats. This production is noteworthy for its design, based on this understanding, to allow neurodiverse children to experience and directly participate in the performance in a sensory-stable environment.

A Stage Where Play and Dance Meet

The quality of 〈Yaho Yaho Echoing Dance〉 has been further enhanced based on the audience response from the showcase held in June. The showcase, which featured 31 families and 83 participants, received widespread praise, including comments such as, "The children's differences were respected within the performance," and "Their participation allowed them to comfortably enjoy the performance in the theater." Building on these positive reviews, this performance focused on the sensory and playful nature of play, setting the stage as a "variable playground" and allowing the children to freely express their spontaneous movements.

Moving beyond artificial objects, the stage environment was expanded by utilizing natural materials such as wind, light, and paper. Live, improvised music was added to enrich the audience's sensory experience.

Beyond Performance: An Educational Program

This performance will be extended to a "Dance-Play Class" tour program and the production of a workbook. "Dance-Play Class," a workshop program where neurodiverse children and artists explore each other's senses through play, served as the creative foundation for this performance. Modu Arts Theater plans to continue developing performances for neurodiverse children into its repertoire, starting with this production.

Chairman Bang Gwi-hee stated, "〈Yaho Yaho Echoing Dance〉 is a performance that respects 'difference' and proposes a new way of communicating with the audience. We will continue to expand the creation and distribution of content for neurodiverse audiences."

The Modu Arts Theater, where the performance will be held, is Korea's first standard performance venue for disabled artists. The theater opened in October 2023 after a complete renovation of the Salvation Army Building Art Hall in Chungjeong-ro, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, by the Korea Disabled Artists' Foundation. This is part of the "Basic Plan for Supporting Cultural and Artistic Activities of Artists with Disabilities," established in 2022. This plan aims to expand opportunities for artists with disabilities through promoting creative work, facilitating barrier-free performances, and providing priority rental and discounted fees for artists with disabilities and organizations.

This performance of 〈Yaho Yaho Echoing Dance〉 is expected to demonstrate the potential of a new stage environment for disabled artists, as envisioned by the Modu Arts Theater. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that the audience is not simply a spectator, but rather a participant, moving and playing alongside. This will be a novel experience, especially for families with neurodiverse children, as well as audiences interested in the expansive potential of dance. This attempt to expand dance from an "art of observation" to an "experience of participation" will provide an opportunity to directly witness how dance interacts with social diversity.
