9월 26일부터 10월 25일까지 서울 도심 속에서 홍콩 예술을 경험할 수 있는 장으로 변한다. 2019년 상하이에서 시작해 광저우, 우한, 방콕을 거쳐 올해 처음 서울에서 열리는 ‘홍콩위크 2025@서울’ 축제는 무용, 음악, 영화, 시각예술, 패션 등 14개 프로그램을 통해 홍콩 예술의 다층적 얼굴을 선보인다. 축제는 단순히 ‘홍콩 예술을 소개하는 장’에 머무르지 않고 서울이라는 도시와 한국 관객에게 새로운 감각과 담론을 불러일으키는 국제 문화 교류 플랫폼으로서 의미를 지닌다.

‘파지옥(破地獄)’은 홍콩 도교 전통 장례 의식 가운데 하나로 망자가 저승의 고통에서 벗어나 극락으로 나아가도록 돕는 의례다. 제단을 열고 신과 영혼을 불러내며 향을 피워 길을 밝히는 과정은 단순한 종교적 행위가 아니라 죽음을 맞이하는 인간의 태도, 그리고 남겨진 자들의 위로와 연결된다.

안무가 증룩산(Terry Tsang)은 이 의식을 다섯 해에 걸쳐 조사하고 연구하며 무용 언어로 옮겨냈다. 관객은 네 명의 한국 무용수와 함께 만들어내는 혼합적 장엄함을 마주하게 된다. 무용수들의 움직임은 장례 의식의 상징적 제스처와 교차하며 현실과 저승, 실재와 환영이 뒤섞이는 순간을 형상화한다.

공연은 장례 문화의 재현을 넘어선다. 곧 죽음을 대하는 인간의 근원적 질문에 닿는다. 우리가 죽음을 어떻게 받아들이는가? 그리고 영혼의 해방이란 무엇인가? 라는 물음에 무용은 제의적 몸짓을 통해 이 질문을 감각화 한다. 관객은 의례의 현장에 초대된 듯한 경험 속에서 생과 사의 경계를 사유하게 된다.

Labora Terry Arts는 사진, 영화, 교육을 넘나들며 창작의 확장은 무용이 단순한 무대 장르가 아니라 삶과 죽음을 해석하는 총체적 예술이 될 수 있음을 보여준다. 이번 작품 역시 Labora Terry Arts가 지속해온 다학제적 예술 실험의 연장선에서 관객을 맞이할 것으로 기대된다.

홍콩현대무용단의 〈미스터 블랭크 2.0〉은 무대와 스크린을 오가며 현대인의 자화상을 보여준다. 원작은 소설가 폴 오스터의 작품에서 영감을 얻어 2018년 초연된 무용극으로 이번 2.0 버전은 신임 예술감독 상 지자(Sang Jijia)가 다시 연출을 맡았다.

작품의 가장 인상적인 설정은 유리 벽이다. 무용수는 밀폐된 공간에서 몸을 움직이고 관객은 그 벽 너머에서 바라본다. 이는 곧 ‘보는 자’와 ‘보이는 자’라는 권력관계를 드러내며 무용수의 존재는 감시 속에서 규정된다. 동시에 무대 곳곳에 설치된 카메라는 움직임을 실시간으로 포착해 스크린에 투사한다. 무용수는 몸으로 사유하고 영상은 이를 증식하며 관객은 현실과 가상이 뒤엉킨 파편을 목격한다.

베테랑 창작팀과 차세대 무용수들이 함께 협업한 이번 무대는 “현대무용과 미디어의 융합이 어디까지 확장될 수 있는가”라는 질문을 던진다. 가상과 실재가 뒤섞인 공간에서 긴장감 넘치는 몸짓은 홍콩현대무용단이 추구하는 동시대적 무용의 실험을 보여줄 것이다. 서울에서 처음 선보이는 이번 작품은 단순히 한 편의 무용극을 넘어 관객들에게 정체성·자아·존재라는 근원적 물음을 다시 떠올리게 할 것이다.

Two Stages Where Tradition and Cutting-Edge Intersect - 〈Pajiheok〉 and 〈Mr. Blank 2.0〉

From September 26 to October 25, the heart of Seoul will transform into a venue for experiencing Hong Kong art. Beginning in Shanghai in 2019, and subsequently traveling to Guangzhou, Wuhan, and Bangkok, "Hong Kong Week 2025@Seoul," now returning to Seoul for the first time this year, showcases the multifaceted face of Hong Kong art through 14 programs spanning dance, music, film, visual arts, and fashion. Beyond simply introducing Hong Kong art, the festival serves as a platform for international cultural exchange, inspiring new sensibilities and discourses for the city of Seoul and Korean audiences.

Pajiok (破地獄) is a traditional Hong Kong Taoist funeral. This ritual is intended to help the deceased escape the suffering of the afterlife and progress to paradise. The process of opening an altar, invoking the gods and spirits, and burning incense to light the way is not simply a religious act; it connects to the human attitude toward death and the comfort of those left behind.

Choreographer Terry Tsang spent five years researching and studying this ritual, translating it into dance. The audience is presented with a hybrid majesty created by four Korean dancers. The dancers' movements intersect with the symbolic gestures of funeral rituals, visualizing a moment where reality and the afterlife, reality and illusion, intertwine.

The performance transcends the mere representation of funeral culture. It addresses fundamental human questions about death. How do we accept death? And what is the liberation of the soul? The dance sensitizes these questions through ritualistic gestures. The audience, as if invited into a ritual, contemplates the boundary between life and death.

Labora Terry Arts' creative expansion, encompassing photography, film, and education, demonstrates that dance is not simply a stage genre, but can become a holistic art form that interprets life and death. This work is expected to welcome audiences as an extension of Labora Terry Arts' ongoing multidisciplinary artistic experimentation.

Mr. Blank 2.0: Fragments of Identity Intersecting Media and the Body

Hong Kong Contemporary Dance Company's "Mr. Blank 2.0" alternates between stage and screen, presenting a self-portrait of modern life. The original dance drama, inspired by novelist Paul Auster, premiered in 2018. This 2.0 version is directed by newly appointed Artistic Director Sang Jijia.

The work's most striking setting is the glass wall. The dancers move within an enclosed space, while the audience watches from beyond the wall. This reveals the power relations between "the viewer" and "the seen," and the dancer's existence is defined by surveillance. Simultaneously, cameras installed throughout the stage capture movements in real time and project them onto screens. The dancers contemplate with their bodies, the images multiply them, and the audience witnesses fragments of reality and virtuality intertwined.

This performance, a collaboration between a veteran creative team and next-generation dancers, poses the question, "How far can the convergence of contemporary dance and media extend?" The tense movements in a space where the virtual and the real intertwine will showcase the Hong Kong Contemporary Dance Company's pursuit of contemporary dance experimentation. Presented for the first time in Seoul, this work goes beyond mere dance drama and will prompt audiences to revisit fundamental questions of identity, self, and existence.

While both "Pajiheok" and "Mr. Blank 2.0" embrace different themes and aesthetics, they share a common thread: questions about boundaries: death and life, reality and illusion, subject and object, reality and virtuality. In this way, "Hong Kong Week 2025@Seoul" is a venue for cultural exchange, connecting the city and art, tradition and cutting-edge, and Hong Kong and Seoul. The two performances, held within the festival's context, are more than mere performances; they will offer audiences both a sensory experience and a chance for reflection. Furthermore, this stage will become a venue for Hong Kong and Seoul to exchange cultures through art, sharing both tradition and a sense of contemporary issues.
